Amazingly – especially when you are looking for your entry level career or entry level job – its more critical than ever to look the part. Why is this so? Simple – your competition isn’t! By that I mean they are not looking their best….trust me.

I have sat in the interviewer’s seat probably around 300 times over the last few years and when interviewing the people looking for entry level employment – you would not believe what they come dressed as.

EVEN IF the job says “Dress code casual” – it does not mean you come to the interview dressed casually. Believe it when I say it completely destroys the first impression…and that counts for a lot. So follow my simple rules and don’t be proud and think ..”its my brains they want – not how I look”.

1) Wear a clean, ironed white shirt. Simple. (and they are the cheapest to buy)
2) Dark blue or Navy Blue PLAIN tie. – Nothing jazzy please… no matter how cool you think it might be – the interviewer will not.
3) Dark grey or dark blue suit. NOT black, not striped, not velvet, not silk…or anything. Keep it simple and clean.
4) Polished shoes. And I mean real shoes, not Nike’s or Sneakers of any kind.

Now if you follow those simple rules – you will look better than 90% of your competition. Believe me….and take you nose ring or earings out … remember its just for the interview.

If you are going to an interview at a bank or accountancy or any job interview in the finance world – you have to know a lot about the world you are going into. By that I don’t mean just the context of the job itself, as I’m sure you know that quite well. I mean a broader knowledge of new and fresh information. For example do you know whether black and scholes is still current in valuing equities? How does gaap compare to IFRS in the accounting rules? Do you know the names of all the financial markets – not just the US ones. What about dax and AIM and so on?

You don’t have to know in detail all the points, but you should have a broad understanding of what they are, so you can at least be prepared to ask clever questions at the interview. It’s the clever questions that impress the interviewers because they can see that you understand the market and are well read.
So how do you get this knowledge? Well start with the financial papers. Wsj (wall street journal) and the ft (financial times) are the leading papers in the financial world, so get your hands on them and start reading the small print. Learn the terminology and look up anything you don’t know on wikipedia.
Then you can walk into that interview with confidence and pride that you have researched and are knowledgable about the sector. Even if you don’t get the opportunity to ask anything remotely current about the Market ….. Having done your research will give you a huge confidence boost and help your winning handshake.

Good luck for that winning career.

Goldman Sachs

by Paul Bannister

I read this week about Goldman Sachs having a 22 billion bonus pot to distribute to it’s staff. You have to wonder how they were able to be so successful in todays recession especially when the rest of the private sector is struggling badly.. And of course they are all looking at the banks as the cause of it all (even though the public have to acknowledge some blame for borrowing beyond their means).

“22 billion bonus pot to distribute to it’s staff”

From a career point of view if you are working at Goldmans it seems through rain or shine you are likely to get a bonus from your job.
In my early years I placed people at Goldman Sachs in their first job and although they went through about 10 interviews, “normal” people got these jobs.  The candidates were simply well rounded guys with a good education…(they certainly weren’t rocket scientists, and the bank won’t hire geeks).   These guys started on £35k gbp ($56k usd) plus whatever bonus the bank chose to issue that year. If you were there now you would be looking at between 500k-1m as a standard bonus, by that I mean as a professional not a banker (obviously bankers get a lot more).
So to get a job at Goldmans, you are going to need a good degree (it doesn’t matter what, and it certainly doesn’t have to be in finance) and a lot of persistence.

  1. Call all the recruitment agents until you find one that is on their preferred list. Apply and follow up, then follow up the next week and the next.
  2. Apply via their website and formal application process.
  3. Lastly don’t forget to follow up via HR directly. Don’t think you are being a nuisance… Only people who do this will be remembered and if you can get one interview  and be on their way to those mega bonuses.

If you don’t get an interview, at least you can honestly tell yourself  you have done everything you can to get there.

Are you connected?

by Paul Bannister

Honestly ask yourself this question:

“Am I doing everything to get a new Job?”

Here’s something that you must do…(most of you already have done), but if you haven’t then read on.  I’ll bet your Facebook or MySpace profile is setup up really well.  All your friends are on it, and you are sharing and making new ones.

But honestly in the professional world you need to be networked at a higher level.  Look at the resources below and get your profile on there.

Then on your CV or Resume make sure you reference your online public profile like this for example.  “Find me on LinkedIn:  www.linkedin.com/in/yourname”

LinkedIn http://www.linkedin.com/

Probably one of the biggest online business connections network in the world.

Monster http://www.monster.com

Yes we all know its for jobs, but have you got your resume / CV on there?  If not do it now.

Zoominfo http://www.zoominfo.com/

Another online resource of business contacts.  You may not be working now but you will be yes?

Xing http://www.xing.com/

Large database of business contacts, get yourself on their now business contacts, get yourself on their now

Ladders http://www.theladders.com/

OK…maybe not yet…but maybe for your next job, you will be on this site looking at jobs in the 100k salary level.

“Good luck for the next move you make!”
